Weather Guidelines
District Response to High and Low Temperatures
Considerations for Hot Weather
The Elementary and Intermediate schools will use the Web Bulb Globe Temperature to determine if it is too hot for outside activities. The scale for determinations is below.
Key Safety Rules
- Always use 10-minute average WBGT.
- Hydration: water breaks every 15–20 min (every 10 min in Orange Zone).
- Students may drink anytime.
- Shade or cooling area must be available outdoors.
- Vulnerable students (asthma, certain meds, recent illness) → Monitor closely or keep indoors
Quick Checks for Heat Illness
- Look for: dizziness, nausea, headache, cramps, flushed/pale skin, confusion, fatigue.
- If symptoms: stop activity → move to shade/AC → hydrate → notify nurse.
- If collapse or altered mental status: Notify nurse/Call 911 → begin rapid cooling (cold water immersion or ice towels to neck/armpits/groin).
Staff Reminders
- Take WBGT readings before first recess/PE and hourly (every 30 min in hot conditions).
- When in doubt → move indoors.
Considerations for Outside Activity During Cooler Temperatures
- When properly clothed, elementary students may participate in outside activities in most weather conditions. Increased caution will be practiced when temperatures fall below 45 degrees including windchill.
- When the wind chill falls below 40 degrees, outside activities will be canceled and students will remain inside.
