Pre-K Students Build Strong Foundations in the Motor Lab

Strong bodies. Focused minds. And lots of movement.
Pre-K students at Fairfield ISD are gaining more than just energy breaks during their time in the Motor Lab. They are building important foundations that support learning in the classroom and beyond.
Students visit the Motor Lab twice each week with Mrs. Michelle Pratt. Each session begins with yoga-style stretching and movement exercises, including favorites like “Superman” and “Popcorn,” which help activate muscles and prepare the body for learning. From there, students rotate through a series of hands-on stations designed to keep them engaged and moving.
The Motor Lab is built around the Ready Bodies Learning Minds curriculum, which focuses on developing the sensory and motor systems that support learning. Through intentional movement, students work on balance, coordination, and body awareness. These skills play an important role in improving attention, behavior, and readiness for academic tasks such as reading and handwriting.
As students move through the stations, they are strengthening core muscles, improving coordination, and learning how to control and organize their movements. These activities may look like play, but each one is designed with purpose, helping students build the physical and neurological skills needed for success in the classroom.
The Motor Lab was made possible through a Fairfield ISD Education Foundation grant several years ago and continues to have a lasting impact on students. By combining movement and learning, the program supports the whole child and helps set the stage for future success.
