Choosing a Trumpet
If you are purchasing a trumpet, there are three general levels to consider: beginner, intermediate, and professional. The best choice depends on your student's experience and long-term goals.
- Beginner trumpets are ideal for students who are just starting or who want a personal instrument while using a school-owned trumpet.
- Intermediate trumpets are a good option for students who plan to continue through high school but do not anticipate playing in college.
- Professional trumpets are recommended for students who plan to continue playing beyond high school or perform at the collegiate level.
A quality used trumpet can often be an excellent value, especially if it is a professional model. When considering a used instrument, pay attention to its condition, age, make, and model—not just whether it is new.
Trusted trumpet manufacturers include:
- Jupiter
- Bach
- Schilke
- Yamaha
- Getzen
- Holton
If you are considering a different brand, please consult one of the Fairfield ISD band directors before making a purchase.

Consistent practice is essential for trumpet players. Developing and maintaining strong embouchure muscles will improve tone, endurance, and overall performance.
Be sure to:
- Practice lip slurs regularly.
- Read music every day.
- Practice scales.
- Focus on producing a full, beautiful tone.
- Avoid excessive tension and mouthpiece pressure while playing.
Recommended Mouthpieces
For most students, we recommend:
- Bach 7C – Standard beginner mouthpiece (included with most student trumpets)
- Schilke 14 or Schilke 15 – Recommended for intermediate and advanced players
Recommended Accessories
Every trumpet player should have:
- Valve oil
- Slide grease
- Mouthpiece brush
- Snake brush (for cleaning the instrument)
