REEDS
All saxophone players should have three working reeds at all times. One or two small chips may be acceptable, but any additional chips, cracks, mold, or other damage will make the reed unusable and it should be replaced.
After each use, reeds should be dried thoroughly and stored in a reed case to help prevent warping and mold. With proper care, a reed typically lasts about three to four weeks.
Beginning saxophone students should use strength 3 reeds. As students become more advanced, many will move to 3.5 or 4 strength reeds. Some manufacturers may also label these as Medium-Hard.
Recommended reed brands:
- Vandoren Strength 3
- La Voz Medium-Hard
Reeds can be purchased at local music stores or online from retailers such as Amazon, Music & Arts, Woodwind & Brasswind (WWBW), and Interstate Music.
